Scam -hit polls Congress faces crucial PDF Print E-mail

At a time when the political climate is mired in scams, four Indian States, Tamilnadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Assam, and Union Territory Puducherry are going for assembly polls. With power sharing talks and poll deals taking more than usual time, the ballot heat took some time to seep into the electorate. Media Voice brings you the mood.

The Indian National Congress, leading the UPA II government in New Delhi, has begun to look at elections in the States as safe deposit assets that it can draw upon in the future.

The Congress had it made. And they had to go and screw it up.

The Congress (I) led UPA (United Progressive Alliance) was having a reasonably good run. Unless they did something disastrously stupid, they more or less had the next election in the bag already. The BJP/NDA coalition stood completely discredited and was nowhere in the reckoning. The only way for them to win the next election was for the UPA to lose it. Looks like they have obliged.

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) polled its highest number of votes in the 1999 Lok Sabha elections, winning five seats to the Parliament. That year it received more than 2.2 million votes. In the last two elections, this figure has come down to 1.7 million votes. In the 14th Lok Sabha it had six seats, and in the 2009 elections it failed to win even a single seat in the Parliament.

In 2006 assembly elections, the PMK won 18 of the 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly. All eyes are now on the party, watching how many seats it will win in 2011 assembly elections. In 2006, the PMK was in a Congress-DMK alliance. The electorate is now keenly waiting to see which alliance it finally chooses; the DMK-led one or the AIADMK led one.
