Five decades ago, as a guileless 10-year-old school dropout wandering among the weaving communities in Tamilnadu, P. Gopinathan never thought that he would one day bring fame to his village, and rejuvenate his state’s handloom sector. His place of birth, Manjavilakom, a tiny coastal strip of land in the south-western end of Kerala, is today widely known for handloom cloth manufacturing. Thousands of women in this hamlet spin and weave in symphony, with Gopinathan as the master weaver.

On a recent sunny morning, clad in a simple white shirt and dhoti, the 64-year-old man strolled through the sprawling compound of Ecotex Handloom. In a span of 40 years, the seven-acre campus has developed slowly and steadily. Women weavers are making Kerala-style sarees, with a variety of borders. As it is ‘Medom’ – the month of festivals and weddings in Kerala, traditional rugs are in great demand. The clatter of the looms, which has been setting the rhythm of their life for three decades, fills the air.

As a child, the mind is curious, exploring the subtle functions of the world, questioning the working of objects and challenging theories that are handed down in textbooks. That is where genius begins. Noble Prize winner Albert Einstein had once said “I have no particular talent. I am merely inquisitive.”

A Bendectine monastery in Bengaluru produces and markets cheese to fund its charitable work.

The cheese used in most five-star hotels in Bangalore comes from a humble monastery located on the outskirts of the city and it is possibly one of its best-kept culinary secrets. Father Michael may have a small cheese production unit, but the cheese that is produced at his factory is truly world-class in every way.

Vallombrosa Cheese is a firm run by priests who are members of the Vallombrosan Benedictine Congregation which is the part of the International Benedictine Confederation. They follow the rule of St. Benedict, Ora Et Labora – that is, prayer and work for the welfare of society, especially the poor and the marginalized.
