Islamabad:: A day of high drama is on the cards in the Pakistani capital, as Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is all set to appear, accompanied by his Cabinet, in the Supreme Court to defend himself against contempt charges.

Gilani will explain why his government hasn't followed the courts orders to pursue corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari in Switzerland.

His lawyer has indicated a compromise, signalling an end to this particular stand-off.

The choice of Aitzaz Ahsan as lawyer is itself being seen as a conciliatory getsure to the Supreme Court.

And while the government is upbeat, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said, "I think things will go smoothly. The charges carry serious penalties."

In combat mode, Gilani's government has put its strategy in place by engaging Aitzaz Ahsan - a senior lawyer known and respected by the judiciary. Also indicating it may allow the National Accountability board to send the letters to the Swiss court and Gilani is expected to make a conciliatory submission.

Despite that, Gilani has few options as the court expects a full apology and that the government will send the letters to the Swiss court.

In the tussle between immunity for President Zardari and his own contempt case in court, Gilani is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

His best hope say observers is that the Supreme Court gives him leniency and some time - that will allow his government to live to fight another day.
